Periodontitis (disease of the periodontium) is a bacterial infection. The starting point is usually dental plaque: metabolic products of the bacteria irritate the gums, which become inflamed and begin to bleed when touched. Tartar and bacteria spread under the gum line and on the root surface. Gum pockets develop, while further deposits form.<\/p>\n
The gums redden, swell, can be painful and recede. At the same time, the immune system fights the bacteria, but the jawbone and supporting fibers are also broken down. As a result, the tooth loosens and, in the worst case, can be lost.<\/p>\n
